Nicole Yarling, a Brooklyn native, is a distinguished violinist, vocalist, composer, and educator whose multifaceted career has significantly influenced the jazz and music education communities. Raised in a musical household, she was inspired early on by her father, a jazz organist and pianist, and artists such as Etta Jones, Miles Davis, and The Beatles.

Early Career and Mentorship

In the 1980s, Yarling relocated to South Florida, where she became an integral part of the local music scene. She fronted the band Little Nicky and the Slicks, which gained acclaim and toured Europe extensively.

Her talent caught the attention of jazz legend Joe Williams, who mentored her and featured her in his final recording, Joe Williams Presents Nicole Yarling at the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild.

 

Educational Contributions

Yarling's dedication to music education is evident through her roles at various institutions. She served as an Assistant Professor and Director of Popular Music at Florida Memorial University, earning honors such as "Teacher of the Year" and "Scholar of the Year" in her division.

Additionally, she was an Adjunct Professor at the University of Miami, teaching voice and composition, and directing the R&B Ensemble for six years.

 

Community Engagement and Recognition

Beyond her teaching, Yarling has been instrumental in community engagement. She established the Jazz Encounters concert series at WDNA in Miami, now in its fourteenth year, and has been involved with the Young Arts organization in Miami for over a decade.

Her contributions to jazz education and community building have been recognized with the Jazz Hero Award from the Jazz Journalists Association in 2015 and induction into the South Florida Jazz Hall of Fame in 2016.

 

Recent Projects

In 2020, Yarling received the Frost Provost Research Award for "The Purple Project - Reimagining the Music of Prince," collaborating with jazz pianist Martin Bejerano.

She also curated the Student Stage for the South Beach Jazz Festival, demonstrating her ongoing commitment to fostering emerging talent.

Nicole Yarling's career exemplifies a harmonious blend of performance, education, and community engagement, solidifying her legacy as a pivotal figure in the jazz and music education landscapes.
