Joachim Witt, born on February 22, 1949, in Hamburg, Germany, is a renowned musician and actor whose career spans several decades. He is particularly known for his contributions to the Neue Deutsche Welle (NDW) movement in the early 1980s, as well as his diverse and evolving musical style that has continued to shape the German music scene.

Early Career and Breakthrough with "Goldener Reiter"

Witt began his music career in the 1970s as a member of the krautrock band Duesenberg, which released several albums, including Duesenberg (1977), Duesenberg 2 (1978), and Strangers (1979). However, it was in the early 1980s that Witt truly rose to prominence as a solo artist. His breakthrough came with the release of his album Silberblick in 1980, which included the iconic track "Goldener Reiter". This song, with its introspective themes of mental health and isolation, became an anthem of the Neue Deutsche Welle and remains one of his most significant works.

Musical Evolution and Success in the 1990s

After a quieter period in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Witt made a major comeback with the album Bayreuth 1 in 1998. The album achieved platinum status in both Germany and Austria, cementing his place in the German music scene once again. His collaboration with Peter Heppner of Wolfsheim on the track "Die Flut" became a major hit and marked the beginning of the "Bayreuth" concept album series.

Collaborations and Recent Projects

Throughout his career, Witt has collaborated with a variety of artists, including Apocalyptica, Oomph!, Angelzoom, and Tilo Wolff of Lacrimosa. In 2012, he released the album DOM, followed by Neumond (2014) and Ich (2015), further demonstrating his musical versatility.

In 2018, Witt released Rübezahl, the first part of a trilogy inspired by the mythical character Rübezahl. The sequels, Rübezahls Rückkehr (2020) and Rübezahls Reise (2022), continued his exploration of this mythical theme, with a blend of electronic sounds and atmospheric melodies.

Latest Achievements

In 2023, Witt announced the release of his album Der Fels in der Brandung (The Rock in the Storm), with the lead single "Schwör mir" as a preview. This album, produced in collaboration with Hardy Krech, combines electronic and rock elements, showcasing Witt's continuous artistic evolution and commitment to pushing musical boundaries.

Through a career spanning several decades, Joachim Witt has consistently reinvented himself, exploring different genres and collaborating with numerous artists, securing his place as an iconic figure in the German music industry.
